Lima's Historic Center, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1991, is one of the best-preserved colonial ensembles in the Americas. Within a few blocks it gathers more than four centuries of history, art and gastronomy.
The Plaza Mayor, heart of the city
An ideal starting point: the Plaza Mayor brings together the Government Palace, Lima Cathedral and the City Hall. If you arrive at noon you can watch the changing of the guard in front of the Government Palace.
The Cathedral, San Francisco and its catacombs
The Basilica and Convent of San Francisco holds a library with thousands of ancient texts and catacombs that served as a cemetery during colonial times. It is, without doubt, one of the most impressive stops of the tour.
Balconies, streets and traditional sweets
- Walk down Jirón de la Unión, the old pedestrian shopping street.
- Admire the carved wooden balconies, a symbol of colonial Lima.
- Try a picarón or a turrón de Doña Pepa at the downtown sweet shops.
Tips for your visit
Bring comfortable shoes, sun protection and water. Most churches close at midday, so it is best to start early. To make the most of the route, we recommend going with a local guide who can explain every detail of its history.
